Ships’ Logs

Logs were kept by the vessel’s master, and a few survive in private hands or regional archives, dating back to the eighteenth century in some cases. However, from 1850 captains had to keep a log of certain events on board their ship by law, including births, deaths, serious illness, and breaches of discipline. Often these logs, which were in a standardised format, are included in collections of crew lists and agreements, but many have been lost. TNA has a collection dating from 1857 to 1972 as series BT165, which is particularly rich for the period 1902–19. They are indexed in TNA’s Catalogue, or via the advanced search in the Discovery service, by ship’s name and official number. Sometimes logs provide extra details above what was required by law, but they do not record a day-by-day account of life on board.
